Blind Date

Angel Episode Review

In which Lindsey sorta kinda in a sideways kind of way indicates that he might consider cultivating the dim beginnings of something resembling a conscience. Then, he changes his mind because, hey! bigger office.

What Happened

Angel runs into a blind assassin named Vanessa Brewer and is particularly interested when he learns that Wolfram and Hart is defending her in a murder trial. Vanessa's lawyer Lindsey MacDonald is mildly horrified when his boss Holland Manners instructs him to create an insanity defense for the woman. Some childhood trauma that would explain why she is about to kill three little kids in cold blood.

Lindsey asks Angel for help and reluctantly aids Angel in breaking into Wolfram and Hart to retrieve computer disks with information on Vanessa's assignment. On the way out, Angel grabs an ornate tube containing an ancient prophecy and sets off the alarms. Holland knows Lindsey had something to do with it, but lets him leave, telling Lindsey that he has to decide what he wants out oflife.

Angel and Lindsey rescue the children and unite them with their mentor, but Angel remains convinced that Lindsey's change of heart is only temporary. When he returns the disks to Wolfram and Hart, Lindsey is offered a promotion by Holland. You took on the firm and won, Holland notes. I need people like that.

Left alone to contemplate his choices, Lindsey decides to accept Holland's offer and sits down in his new office to brood.

What We Learned

  • Our first stop doesn't always have to be World of Weird.
  • One has to admire Vanessa's talent. And her work ethic.
  • Lindsey has made some bad choices.
  • The world isn't that complicated. It's designed for those who know how to use it.
  • You have to make a decision to change.
  • The righteous shall walk a thorny path.
  • Here it is: evil white folks really do have a Mecca.
  • Terminating an employee is never pleasant.
  • There is a design. Hidden in the chaos as it may be, but it's there and Angel has his place in it.
  • No one has their own life. We're all part of something larger.

Best Lines

Wesley: "Perhaps Angel's discovered a new species."
Cordelia: "Helen Kellerus Homicidalus?"

Angel: "I nodded off. Did you get to the part where you're evil?"

Lindsey: "Sorry, I'm late. Hope I didn't worry anyone."
Cordelia: "We just figured you were dead."

What Did I Think?

It's probably one of the few times I've ever seen a villain tell someone they can go, and they really mean it.
