Forever
Buffy Episode Review
In which Dawn is really sad and a magic spell goes horribly wrong.
What Happened
Feeling abandoned by her sister after Joyce's death, Dawn tries to resurrect her mother.
The Good
- Poignant start with scenes between Buffy, Giles and Dawn, and the confrontation between Xander and Spike.
- "When two people are much older and way richer and far less stupid." Xander and Anya had their moments.
- Wonderful scene with Buffy and Angel, though one wonders if his memories got a rewrite concerning Dawn when he hit town.
- Oz has been worried about Willow's magic use since Season Four, here we get just a little hint as she is more interested in the "can it be done" of resurrecting Joyce than the right and wrong of it.
- They do a good job of covering Dawn's tracks, between Willow's clues and her discussion with Giles, so that it's not quite so coincidental that she is able to find the spell she needs.
-
Dawn: "You're, like, stalking my sister. You're doing this to get in good with Buffy."
Spike: "Buffy hears about this and she'll drive a redwood through my heart." I suppose we should give Spike a little credit for helping Dawn out of the "goodness" of his "heart." - "I'm even going to let it slide on the lame toadying on account of you're dying and all." Glory had her moments, too.
- Creepy Joel Grey - in the nicest way, of course.
- You'd think someone would notice that Dawn's a more likable character when she's not pouting, whining or spouting prefab teenage angst.
- Every bit of the last scene between Buffy and Dawn was great. Pitch-perfect performances from Sarah Michelle Gellar and Michelle Trachtenberg, helped by good writing and direction.
The Bad
- Willow is a lousy liar. The 'We-got-it' point was past in about three seconds, yet she stammered on for another minute at least.
The Cliche
- The big build-up of a character about to do something horrible, then talked out of it at the last second.
What Did I Think?
Following up "The Body" should have been impossible; this made it look almost easy.
