I Only Have Eyes for You

Buffy Episode Review

In which there is much romance... and some ghosts.

What Happened

A tragic ghostly love story plays out in the halls of the school, as a boy who accidentally shot his teacher, and then committed suicide, seeks forgiveness. Taking control of Buffy, he finally finds peace when the teacher, who was also his lover, uses Angel to break the murderous cycle and forgive him.

The Good

  • "I'm not seeing anyone. ... Ever. Again." Buffy moping at the Bronze. But cute moping.
  • Giles: "I encourage you to always challenge me when you think it's appropriate - except in this case, where I am clearly right and our clearly wrong." Poor Giles is still hung up on Jenny.
  • Dru's not even trying to play well with Spike these days. And Angel is feeling her up, right there in front of him. That is going to end badly.
  • Buffy/James and Angel/Grace. Clever and sweet.
  • "Try to have fun without me." "Oh, I will." Spike watching Angel and Dru leave together, then standing up from his wheelchair. So beautiful.

The Bad

  • Willow is still teaching Miss Calendar's class? Without any adult supervision? And what about other classes Willow's taking? Shouldn't she be, I don't know, attending them?

The Cliche

  • Possession stories.
  • Tragic love affairs.

Best Lines

Snyder: "I'm no stranger to conspiracy. I saw JFK. I'm gong to look at all the pieces, calmly and rationally, until I know how this is all your fault."

Xander: "Something weird is going on. Isn't that our school motto?"

Cordelia: "I saw that movie. Even the priest died!"

Giles: "To forgive is an act of compassion. It's done because they need it, not because they deserve it."

What Did I Think?

Nice switch to the possession, and a beautiful pair of performances from Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz.
