Pretender

Countdown: Pretender Episode Review

"I'd forgotten this basement was here." In which I wonder how the hell you forget a basement?

What Happened

While helping out at church, Jarod meets his orphan of the week, Ryan, who isn't really an orphan. In fact, his big problem is that he has too many parents: his mom lied about who is father is, so when he needs a kidney transplant, neither mom or the man she conned into marriage is a match.

Bazooka Jarod: Pretender Episode Review

In which Miss Parker has Family Issues and Jarod finds a bad guy.

What Happened

Jarod leads Miss Parker to a house in one of her mother's photos, a children's home. She tries to match the "rescued children" from the envelope, but all their records were destroyed in a fire in the seventies, shortly after Mrs. Parker died.

Back From the Dead Again: Pretender Episode Review

In which the Triumvirs' appearance would explain the price of Funyuns.

What Happened

Tensions have been high at the Centre since Mr. Raines was shot, though Miss Parker is far more concerned with her father's disappearance. That is, until she learns that Mr. Lyle has moved into her father's office, along with Brigette, the new cleaner. He begins by implying that Sydney can't be trusted and continues by announcing that the Centre is losing patience with Jarod.

Collateral Damage: Pretender Episode Review

In which I doubt that Miss Parker wants to process unresolved childhood issues.

What Happened

Jarod joins the Army Rangers in order to investigate a Vietnam Vet accused of treason after classified documents were found in his possession. As he had just gotten blown off a land-mine, Mark Clements wasn't able to defend himself. The only survivors from Bravo Company are crusty Captain McClaren and Stanfield, a former grunt who is now a Senator.

Baby Love: Pretender Episode Review

In which it's better to be lucky than good.

What Happened

Jarod is hiding from Miss Parker in a dumpster, when someone tosses a baby in next to him. Jarod, being Jarod, makes it all about him and his parents and his feelings of abandonment. He discovers that the child was dumped after his mother ran afoul of a district attorney seeking re-election and exposes the bad guy to his constituents.

Corn Man: Pretender Episode Review

In which we realize that graveyards are always covered in mist.

What Happened

Jarod impulsively buys a cam-corder at a pawn shop and recovers the tape. The pleasant mother-daughter bonding trip ends when they are attacked by an unknown man. Rather than inform the authorities, he uses the tape as a guide to a small Arizona town where they were staying.

Cold Dick: Pretender Episode Review

In which, some days, it doesn't pay to answer your emails.

What Happened

Jarod's in Las Vegas, helping out Argyle, who has quite a story to tell: Argyle was pretending to be the partner of a vanished PI in order to get in good with Mona, a show-girl working for Dirty Willy. Dirty Willy was found hanging in the back of his club. Argyle did not see the killer.

Angel's Flight: Pretender Episode Review

In which Jarod does not exactly blend in the Goth scene.

What Happened

Jarod spots a Missing Persons poster and is off in search of Jessica, a young woman dealing with her mother's suicide. She is obsessed with angels and falls under the spell of Hawk, a Goth "magician" who spends a lot of time talking about something called "Angel's Flight."

Bulletproof: Pretender Episode Review

In which people should not give themselves nicknames that result in tortured life metaphors.

What Happened

Jarod joins a SWAT team to figure out who offed a guy named Daniel Lang. It's your basic selection of traumatized surviving partners, testosterone-laden twits, weepy girlfriend and orphaned sons. The only clue is that Lang was talking about an arms-smuggling Russian in the weeks before his death.
