Glee Episode Review

In which it is April? Will's old flame returns to Glee, giving Kristin Chenoweth another chance to show off. And Kurt gets another signal that the universe doesn't want him to become a relationship counselor.

Wow, does it hurt to watch Kurt flailing around in the throes of his crush on Finn. He's just so eager.

Bad Reputation (R)

Much can be forgiven with a great rendition of Total Eclipse of the Heart. Big "awwww" in Rachel's general direction.

As an aside, Finn is generally regarded as a bit dim, but in both episodes he totally calls out Kurt and Rachel on their actions and articulates exactly why it was so hurtful. He gets that Kurt is feeling left out and hurt by his father's bonding with Finn. And he nails Rachel for wanting to seem sought after and popular. I seem to recall a couple of other places over the course of the series where he displays an real emotional insight. It's so refreshing to see a TV character not get away with thier justifications as someone simply steps up with, "No. What you were really doing was..."

I liked the pieces, but I'm not sure that they held together as a coherent whole.

Quinn being human at Mercedes, even if she did wrap up in a "wonder of motherhood" blanket was moving, but the story overall was a bit Afterschool Special. Not that I didn't sniffle when Kurt made a heartfelt apology and gave Mercedes a hug, but I sniffle at Hallmark ads, so that doesn't prove anything.

On other fronts, I felt for both Kurt and Finn and it was nice to see Finn in a situation that did not revolve around his love life so we could see another side of his character. Would have been nicer if they'd given Kurt more to do than be the Gay Son, but if that was the relationship between him and his dad that had been set up, that was what you go with.

They gave the parents good, deep material and thankfully did not pull out a sitcom Parent Trap routine. It left things a bit ambiguous, particularly in regards to Kurt's feelings, which I think was the difference between that side of the episode compared to the Mercedes/Sue/Cheerio stuff.

Will and April seemed to be mostly a way to show off Kristen Chenoworth. Always worth doing - but April is a problematic character since she's so over the top. The routine is that she's pushing and pushing and then collapsing inwards and learning a valuable life lesson. Which is fine, but after the second or third time around and she'll still didn't really learn anything and is still repeating the same behavior, the law of diminishing returns kicks in. Why would the audience invest in her changes if they don't ever stick?

They are going to eventually hit the same place with Sue Sylvester. She's either this caricature with very occasional flashes of humanity that may or may not be sincere or she's Growing as a Person, in which case you have to moderate her behavior somewhat. If her whole identity is a lack of moderation, then growth takes away the very thing that made her interesting in the first place. But if she is static, then you're running on borrowed time before the audience gets tired of her schtick.

I don't think they are at that point yet. This was just a slightly off-balance episode that probably feels a bit weak particularly in comparison to last week.

Home (Season Finale)

Connor's happy? Lilah's back? The gang is taking over Wolfram and Hart? And it mostly makes sense. That's so cool.
