Vampire Diaries - Plan B (R)

I still just love this episode. It has everything going for it - drama, romance, a little bit of action, and a really great twist at the end as Katherine gets very nasty.

Kill or Be Killed (R)

So much packed into this one. From Elena and Caroline sweet reconciliation to the whole Sheriff Forbes and her Vampire Hunters thing. And then there was Katherine…

Plan B (R)

I already gushed over "Plan B" yesterday, so we'll just let this go with the observation that what Katherine did with Jenna still gives me the creeps. (In a good way.) And that Caroline's final scene with her mom had me sniffling. Again.

Xmas Presents: Vampire Diaries - Plan B

on Wed, 2010-12-15 15:00

I'm going to have to be careful not to repeat "ups the stakes" too often, aren't I?

For December, I decided to highlight my very favorite episodes, like little Christmas presents from television.

This was the episode that decided I loved this show. I'd started with the second season, which meant getting up to speed on things and I kind of held back because the humor is more understated than Buffy. (Joss Whedon for the win) But the drama won me over here: Damon and Mason, plus Caroline and her mother, plus Elena's resourcefulness and bravery. The show just works.

Halloween Episodes: Werewolves

on Fri, 2010-10-29 10:29

As we get closer to Halloween, let's troll through the archives in search of episodes that put us in a Spooky Mood.

Werewolves are all about the beast within. Tough to pull off the special effects, but fun for the actors, who get to go all angry and snarly. Although we are seeing trend towards the zen surfer wolf (Oz on Buffy, Mason on Vampire Diaries) when it's a recurring character. With this in mind, some shows play up the contrast - skinny things who wolf out into killing machines. Others go the traditional Hugh Jackman route with a hairy muscular type. Either way, there's always at least one scene of someone getting growly while a supporting character gasps, "What's going on? Are you okay?" instead of running for the hills.

Angel
Somewhere in season five, Angel had a (sort-of) girlfriend who turned out to be a werewolf. She was relatively cool, particularly when she showed up during the Puppet episode.
Buffy - Phases / New Moon Rising
Well. Oz. Duh. Best reaction shot ever.
Charmed - The Wendigo
Classic Charmed. And Piper is a good candidate for the transformation because she's ordinarily so calm and practical.
Dresden Files - Hair of the Dog
One of Harry's femme fatales gets turned into a werewolf. She had pretty hair. (But not when she was wolfed out. That would be weird.)
Lost World - The Visitor
Veronica's boyfriend shows up and wants to bite her.
Mutant X - Whose Woods are These?
More of a Bigfoot than a werewolf, but there was lots of hair! Went for angsty monster at the end.
Special Unit 2 - The Pack
Nick becomes a werewolf in order to go undercover. There... really should have been a better plan.
The Vampire Diaries - Bad Moon Rising / Memory Lane / Kill or Be Killed / Plan B
The "Lockwoods are werewolves" story. Killer. Though we only really saw Mason wolf out once and that was the episode I missed... (Which believe me, I'm kicking myself over as the season goes on.)

Can any of these wolves live up to the classic Wolfman of yore?

Plan B

Vampire Diaries Episode Review

In which Katherine needs a new boyfriend. Okay. Now I'm just flat out loving The Vampire Diaries and that's all there is to it.

The Vampire Diaries - Plan B

Whew! Poor Stefan! And Caroline! And Jenna! And just about everyone else, too. (Except Bonnie. She needs a "purpose in life" beyond just bumping into people and having plot-related visions.) Damn. This show is driving me to exclamation points. I'm getting to Buffy-levels of "NO! You can't be over yet!"

Nikita - Resistance

This? I liked. Lost of canon and world-building. Actually seeing Alex being trained instead of just doing computer and/or exercise stuff in the background. Okay, I called the major plot points fairly early on, but they made a couple of unexpected choices come the end that I liked. "Percy" is an appropriate name for him after all; he's such a slimy little weasel.
