Starhunter 2300 Episode Review

Recap of January 2011 on ThinkWatchThink

Last day of January. What happened to January? Oh well, at least all the shows are about to come back from winter hiatus. Not like I was lacking for anything to watch. I got a real kick out my little project to watch and review something new each day throughout the month. There were shows I liked, and a couple shows I didn't - but at least I was never bored!

Da Vinci's Inquest - The Lottery
A bit of a cheat since I saw them all years ago, but the first time I'd reviewed it on the site. If you get the chance - and prodecural shows are your thing - definitely check it out.
The Unusuals - Pilot
Bonus points for Amber Tamblyn. Going to follow-up on this one soon.
Intelligence - Pilot
Another great Canadian drama - if a little hard to just jump into. Ian Tracy and Klea Scott are fantastic as the leads.
The Strip - Episode One
Standard issue cop show. The cute Aussie accents didn't quite make up for the by-the-numbers of it all.
Legend of the Seeker - Denna
Finished the second season by now - so good! If you loved the old Xena and Hercules, this is a worthy successor.
Sarah Connor Chronicles - Pilot
Working my way through the first season. Loving Lena Headey as Sarah.
Lexx - I Worship His Shadow
Not so good. May check back again to see if it improves, but not likely.
Starhunter 2300 - Rebirth
Not. Good.
Sanctuary - Sanctuary for All pt 1
Intriguing. I do like Amanda Tapping, but the overwhelming averageness of the other main character may be a sticking point.
Monarch of the Glen - Episode One
Traditional fish-out-of-water series, but has some appealing characters.
Gossip Girl - Pilot
Finished the first season by now. Good example of the Teen Angst genre.
Skins - Tony
Another good teen show. Looking forward to checking out the second season.
Californication - Pilot
I will only watch if I can be assured that Hank will die a quick, painful death.
In Plain Sight - To Serge with Love
Pleasant characters, but still a procedural. I'll have to give it another look. Eventually. Maybe.
Prison Break - Pilot
Has potential and I am curious about what will happen, but it hasn't landed on top of the DVD que just yet.
Pushing Daisies - Pie-Lette
Working my way through the first season. Loving Emerson the best. And all of Chuck's pretty pretty dresses.
Dexter - Pilot
Not certain about this one. Could go either way.

So that was this year's batch. Any suggestions for next year?

Well, quite a bit went by over the last week or so.

Dollhouse - Epitaph Two

So it's over. I really think that once they put their head down and started telling the story they intended, the show got infinitely better. And there was a lot of potential ground to cover, as evidenced by how much had to be winked at or left out. For one thing, what was the deal with Alpha?

One strength of this episode was that it squeezed every last drop out of all the dialogue. Every sentence had to move the story forward - including enough information to keep the viewer oriented to this new world order - without descending into dull exposition. It's a fine line to walk.

Caprica - Rebirth

Really liking this show. They added both local color world building and plenty of humor, while not losing the heart of the characters. I was especially impressed at Amanda figuring things out so quickly. Any other show would have dragged it out For.Ev.Er. Instead, they play the fallout, which - let's face it - is the far more interesting part.

It also occured to me that the old-style look and feel of Caprica is very appropriately. The story so far reminds me a lot of those early sci-fi short stories from the forties and fifties that asked some of the same "What If?" questions.

A Year in Provance

Via Netflix. Old fashioned Brit comedy based on the book by Peter Mayle. It was sweet but not very challenging. A sort of palate cleanser of a show.

Australian Open - Men's Final

There's going to be an entire decade where tennis players measure themselves with, "And then I lost in the Final against Federer."
