Furt
Glee Episode Review
In which there is a wedding. It's a happy Glee for once and I'm good with that.
What Happened
Burt and Carol announce their engagement, much to Kurt's delight. Finn is a little less enthused by the hoopla, but Kurt cheerfully starts organizing the ceremony.
Will spots Karofsky menacing Kurt in the hallways and drags him in to see Principal Sue. She can't do anything about shoves and glares, so the kids bands together to protect Kurt. Rachel wants the football players to stand up to Karofsky, only to find Finn hesitating. He doesn't want to stir things up on the team and is worried that causing trouble will result in Bieste given his quarterback spot to Sam. He's not there when Mike and Artie confront Karofsky, but Sam steps in and winds up a hero for fighting back against the bully.
Just after Sue announces that she will celebrate her superiority by marrying herself, her mother - the famous Nazi hunter - returns to town to visit her daughters. Mom's kind of a horrible person, and after Kurt's dilemma reminds her that there are other people who have troubles in the world, Sue dubs her mother a bully and disinvites her from the wedding.
Learning that Karofsky threatened to "kill" his son, Burt makes a more forceful complaint to Sue, who expels Karofsky. After watching Kurt deal with all this, Finn takes center stage at the wedding and makes a heartfelt speech to his new step-brother, reaffirming that they are family. The honeymoon's over the next day, however, when Sue announces that Karofsky has appealed to the school board and is returning. Deciding to spare Kurt further trauma, Burt and Carol transfer him to Dalton Academy.
Which means that when Sectionals roll around next week, Kurt will be singing for the competition.
The Good
- So cute. Burt and Carol.
- Karofsky's expulsion. A bit wish-fulfillment, but still satisfying.
The Better
- The kids rallying around Kurt.
- Glad they didn't lose Santana's tryst with Finn. Even if her sudden interest here came out of nowhere. I guess she's pissed at Rachel?
The Best
- Carole Burnett.
- Finn steps up. It was a bit much by the time everyone else had said how wonderful Kurt was, but it meant a lot coming from Finn after everything over the past season.
- Kurt's transfer. Because there was a point to this aside from all the Afterschool Special.
What Did I Think?
I liked the wedding, because who doesn't, right? Though the "We [Heart] Kurt" stuff got a bit old by the end. I mean, I do indeed [heart] Kurt, but I don't think we need to drag him into everything. And by "everything," I mean the wedding ceremony itself kind of drowned in sappiness there for a minute.
And I'm pleased that the Karofsky thing has started to ripple out and effect people who aren't Kurt. Namely, it's going to change the stakes at Sectionals, bringing it all back around to the group as a whole. Not to minimize the importance of lessons against bullying, but the show is not just about Kurt. There's been a bit of a mono-focus lately. The more things a plot element bounce off of, the more likely it is to hold my interest, so to get this outcome makes me sit up and take notice.
