Glee Episode Review
In which it is April? Will's old flame returns to Glee, giving Kristin Chenoweth another chance to show off. And Kurt gets another signal that the universe doesn't want him to become a relationship counselor.
What Happened
Sue orders Mercedes to lose ten pounds before a reporter arrives to do a feature on the Cheerios. Dutifully dieting, Mercedes and Kurt argue over whether it is more important to be a thin popular cheerleader or a healthy happy nerd. When Mercedes passes out from hunger, Quinn talks to her about not letting Sue grind her down. Mercedes takes advantage of the pep rally to sing out in favor of finding inner beuaty. As Sue squirms, the reporter is charmed and inspired by the routine.
Needing somehwere for the Glee Club to practice, Will checks out the local rollerink. He finds old flame April in charge of the place. She offers him a place to practice and invites herself over for a date. Will talks to April, letting her down gently and encouraging her to stand up for herself and be more than some rich old man's mistress.
Finn is freaked when his mom starts dating Kurt's dad. Kurt looks forward to moving in with his crush, which doesn't help any. Kurt is a bit put off when Finn and Burt start bonding over football. Kurt and Finn agree to break up their parents. When Finn tries to run the mother of all guilt trips, however, his mother hits back, telling him how lonely she's been for years since her husband died.
Burt makes a heartfelt plea to Finn about his love for Finn's mother, winning him over, but Kurt is still hurt by how his little scheme has left him out of the new family unit.
What I Liked
- It's a sign of just how good Chris Colfer is that his stalker-lite redition of "Home" is riveting.
- Quinn has a heart. Who knew? I'm not entirely onboard with her "babies change everything" Zen mother rountine, but I liked the scene between her and Mercedes.
What I Sniffled At
- Finn's scene with his mother. I like that she doesn't back down. There's no Parent Trap collapse to the whims of her bratty adolescent. She is the parent here, so she's in charge and he's gonna have to grow up and do as he told. (You get the idea.)
- I also like that Finn noticed now upset Kurt was and pretty much knew exactly why.
What's Poetic Payback
- Well. Kurt. Maybe you shouldn't be rearranging other people's live according to your hormones, hmmmm?
Best Line
Kurt: "You both have dead spouses. Maybe you should talk."
What Did I Think?
I sympathize with Kurt, but that still doesn't mean that he should be using his father as bait to get at Finn. Seriously. On the other hand, Chris Colfer looks so adorably devestated that things didn't work out according to Kurt's little fairy tale script that I just want to hug him and tell him it's okay. And the whole thing is so the reverse of the average chirpy TV plotline where wacky kids do wacky things to interfere with their parent's romance that I just love it.
