Never Been Kissed

Glee Episode Review

In which Kurt has really good taste in men. That said, I still can't make up my mind about this episode of Glee.

What Happened

Will launches the second annual Boys vs. Girls mash-up contest. Ordered to sing with the boys, and upset by the continual bullying of Karofsky (that blond thug in a letter jacket), Kurt takes an opportunity to go check out their Sectionals competition, "the Warblers" from an exclusive boys school. He takes one look at the super adorable lead singer Blaine and starts crushing hard. (As does most of the audience.)

Blaine is the first out gay teenager Kurt has met and he has some words of wisdom in regards to Karofsky. When Kurt stands up to Karofsky, however, Karofsky surprises everyone - including himself - by kissing Kurt.

Over in the other plot, Will learns that the kids on the football team have been controlling their "urges" by imagining Coach Bieste in lingerie and tutus. When he feels the need to tell Bieste, the news hurts her feelings so much that she decides to quit. Feeling responsible (because he is), Will comforts Bieste with a pep talk and she changes her mind.

The Good

  • I like that Artie acknowledges that he didn't handle the thing with Brittany very well. Just wish that this wasn't so disjointed. And that Puck's plan didn't imply that Santana and Brittany were going to fall for his reverse psychology BS. I'm going to pretend that they were just faking an interest in Puck because he was buying them breadsticks.

The Better

  • Puck and Artie. They are so unexpected that it works and it gives them both someone to talk to.
  • Will being a decent human being with Bieste instead of a self-absorbed twerp.

The Best

  • Sue's supervillain cackle.
  • Blaine. 'Nuff said.

What Did I Think?

I came down hard on Karofsky in my "watching" review and he's still not my favorite person, but I admit that I don't really want to see him crunched. I guess that it's a sign of just how much I adore poor little Kurt that I can't stand seeing him miserable. And how cute was Kurt smiling that sweet smile at Blaine's texts? More of that please. Drama can be other things than making your characters miserable.

I just can't decide whether I like this one. I feel for Kurt on an almost visceral level, which would indicate that they are doing something right, but I'm not sure that the whole thing holds together in the long run.

And in regards to Bieste, I really wish that they'd gone the less obvious route and kept her confident instead of playing the "woe is me, I'm not like everyone else" card. We have that - all over the place on Glee - why not show someone who has grown into her "differentness" and is happy?
