Past as Prologue

Mutant X Episode Review

In which Charmed wants their plot back.

What Happened

Realizing that he is dying, Gabriel Ashlocke tries to revive an ancient Goddess, hoping she will use her magic to prolong his life.

The Good

  • Victoria Pratt has gotten a lot better about on the wire stunts. (Or her stuntwoman has.)
  • "You want to break something, fine. Just don't do it in here." Adam ordering an incensed Shalimar out. She does break something, too, out in the hallway.
  • Reason why Jesse is cooler than Brennan: he didn't need his powers to shoot that three pointer.
  • They've stopped trying to come up with brand new powers for each new mutant and just come up with a list of old standbys. It's good, because some of those new powers were getting little strange.
  • Adam wants to cure Gabriel because all new mutants are somewhat instable and may eventually "burn out" like Gabriel is. Yet another good scene between Adam and Shalimar as she asks him to help keep Gabriel out of her head.

The Bad

  • So now Adam believes in magic. Tell me this isn't going to turn into a lame Charmed rip-off.
  • Where did Adam learn how to read hieroglyphics - or how to speak ancient Egyptian?

The Cliche

  • Gabriel's doctor makes house calls in a miniskirt?
  • Because Super Villians Aren't Grateful: The doctor looks so surprised. Who did she think Gabriel was going to dump in the tank?

Best Lines

Jesse: "Ashlocke was willing to kill for this?"
Brennan: "Ashlocke is willing to kill to get out of a parking ticket."

What Did I Think?

I was willing to believe that ancient-Egyptian-chick might have been a mutant (that New Mutants weren't necessarily "new"), but then they dragged magic into it.This is a quasi-science based show; there's no reason to turn Adam into a warlock.
