Vampire Diaries - Daddy Issues

I'm still waiting for John to actually do something before I decide about him. So far, he's just kind of hovered. I love how he just happened to have a weapon against Originals. He's like the "there's an App for that" of the supernatural world.

My favorite part was Caroline telling Tyler where to stuff his excuses. Oh, and Stefan knowing that what Caroline needed was her friends. He's such a sweetie.

Nikita - Coup de Grace

I watched enough to know within five seconds of seeing her that Princess Kristina was a villain. Then - while Alex and Nikita continued to saying absolutely nothing of any depth or emotion - I weighed the chances of my caring whether Prince Eric got whacked or not. Deciding that I did not care, I turned off the television.

I know I usually can find something nice to say about the show (surprising considering how quickly I turned on the new V) but there's just something missing. For example, I watched nearly all The Vampire Diaries reruns over the holidays. If I watched any of Nikita's, I've completely forgotten. I'll go out of my way to rewatch "Plan B" if given the opportunity. Looking back, there's not really an episode of Nikita that I can say the same thing about.

The show is treading water, both in terms of story and character. There's no ambition in how they are handling the material and precious little drive and focus. Nikita the character is trying to be all bad ass, "I'll do whatever it takes and sacrifice whoever I have to." Nikita the show keeps undercutting her with the "I'm the hero, please like me because I make sad face over my past sins" routine. If I could go back and change one thing, I'd make Nikita less of a good guy. I'd like to see her as a corrupted by her grief on the edge could go either way sort of character.

It was a clever choice to put Nikita on the outside and make Alex our entrance into Division. They needed to take it a step further to really start saying new things with the story that hadn't already been covered in two movies, a six season series, and every other spy franchise ever produced. And if they haven't got that, then they need something more than this hushed, grey, super serious thing. Put some flair into it! And no. Ryan Fletcher does not count as "flair."

Nikita Episode Review

In which Birkoff demands an energy beverage. A breather and set-up episode of Nikita, which nonetheless manages to reveal some backstory on Alex.

The Vampire Diaries - The Descent

I get the point of Rose now. She's there to push Damon's emotional buttons and - more importantly - demonstrate to Elena what happens when you spend your whole life running from the likes of Elijah and Klaus. Still wish they'd given Rose more of a personality as they went, but I guess I can't have everything. And I'm getting capable non-victim Elena, deeply conflicted but back in badass mode Damon, and Stefan finally doing something proactive, so I'm not complaining. Plus, the rise of the Caroline-Tyler-Jules B-plot is definitely going to be worth watching.

Nikita - Free

Though somewhat distracted by Alex's shining, bouncy hair, I enjoyed this episode. The growing partnership between Nikita and Fletcher is fun to watch. Nikita gets to play with Fletcher just a bit, which makes a change from frowny-central with Michael. In this episode, Birkoff also got to show a bit of a different - less toady - side to the character in his confrontations with Fletcher. While not quite the home run that the back-from-hiatus The Vampire Diaries hit, Nikita continues to develop nicely.

Vampire Diaries - By the Light of the Moon

No tomb sex! YES! Thank you! The show did not get stupid. Just a little bitty dream sequence stupid. I should have remembered that promos are almost always deceptive manipulations created by sadists. (Of course, I mean that in the best possible way.) I'm just so grateful that I don't have to spend Christmas dealing with the possibility that my favorite show is suddenly partying like it's Days of Our Lives circa 1992.

On the other hand, while I said I wasn't going to bash Rose anymore, I have to say that every time she bursts into tears? My heart shrinks three sizes. Stop doing that!

Nikita - All the Way

Alas. Poor Thom. It would have been even more effective if we'd seen him more often, but Lyndsy Fonesca sold Alex's pain so well. And they managed to get Nikita into and out of Division neatly in under an hour. I'm going to assume that with Alex graduated to agent, she'll have more freedom to come and go, making it unnecessary for her and Nikita to communicate by instant message. I like that there is forward motion and change here, instead of just Missions of the Week.

Dark Matter

Nikita Episode Review

In which Percy is a tool. Nikita crafts a good episode by following up on Owen and the black boxes. Continuity for the win!

Vampire Diaries - The Sacrifice

More Damon and Elena stuff. Well done stuff, but stuff all the same.

Um, Damon? Sweetie. Were you in such a rush to go off and rescue Elena that you couldn't take five seconds to shout down the hole to your brother that his girlfriend is in danger? Didn't think that Stefan would want to be in the loop on this?

And now Stefan's in the tomb with Katherine headed for one of Soap Opera's Greatest Cliches Ever: we're stuck somewhere dank and dirty with no hope of rescue while our respective significant others worry about us and we have nothing to do so let's have sex.

Come on, show! Be better than that.

Nikita - Dark Matter

Owen's back and a lot less angst-ridden. Though this was not the yukfest promised the by ad, with all its "ruh-oh" sound effects and deceptive edits. The internal and external politics of Division are getting clearer. Percy and Birkoff's last scene was very effective. I take back almost everything I said about Percy not being scary. (He is still named "Percy," after all.)

I'm of two minds about Fletcher. He had more spirit and brains than some of the Victims of the Week, but we're still not seeing how these loose threads (Fletcher, Ari, Robbie) are going to get handled. Bringing Owen back - and with a plan, no less - is a good start. Keep going in that direction.

One Way

Nikita Episode Review

In which Michael needs new family. It's a predictable Nikita, but works nonetheless.

Vampire Diaries - Katerina

Gawd. Rose is the least bad-ass vampire. Ever.

All she did was hover and fidget and look worried. She even looked afraid of Elena. Rose finally produced something useful in leading Damon to her contact, but Slater's not even some jittery technovamp in a cool underground lair. He had a coffee shop. A coffee shop? Really? That's all you got? And when Elijah attacked and every other vamp in the place was hustling out the backdoor, Rose just lay there turning into a crispy critter and wailing. You're at least five hundred years old, woman. Surely you've grown a spine in all that time.

Rose is like the anti-Katherine at this point. Harmony could beat her up. (Without even needing her minions.)

Nikita - One Way

Not any better. Anyone who is surprised that Michael is suffering from Dead Wife Syndrome is not allowed to watch television any more.

Nikita Episode Review

In which there is a mess, but an intriguing mess. Nikita slides from cliched political sex scandals to a widening field of international players.
