Brave New World

Vampire Diaries Episode Review

In which Damon needs new friends. The ones he's got keep trying to kill him and that would totally make me sad.

What Happened

Mrs. Mayor asks Damon to become the head of the Mystic Falls Anti-Vampire Council and of course he accepts. While at the Lockwoods, Damon becomes suspicious of Tyler and Mason. He eavesdrops on a conversation where Mason keeps asking Tyler about his periodic fits of rage.

Elena demands that Bonnie and Stefan lose the supernatural long enough help launch the school carnival in Caroline's absence. Caroline off in hospital, busily discovering that she's becoming a vampire after being killed by Katherine last episode. After figuring out that sunlight is a bad thing now, Caroline compels a nurse to release her that evening and goes to the carnival. Unable to control her urges, Caroline feeds on a carvinal worker, unaware that Damon decides she needs to be killed before she becomes a liability.

Stefan and Elena object and intervene before Damon can stake Caroline. Stefan cleans Caroline up and assures her that she can learn to control herself. Deciding that all this is Damon's fault, Bonnie uses her magic to set him on fire, but Elena shakes her out of it. Going home, Damon finds Jeremy waiting with some vervain and a stake, trying to decide whether to take up this whole vampire hunting hobby his family is so into.

Tyler demands to know why Mason is being so weird, but Mason pretends he doesn't know what Tyler is talking about. Hearing Mason ask about a moonstone that is a family heirloom, Tyler digs into his father's safe and pockets the rock before his mother can hand it over.

The Good

  • Stefan's "that's where we keep the full crazy" warning to Jeremy about Damon.
  • Caroline's slow discovery of what has happened to her. Effective.
  • Damon and Caroline. Both scenes were well done.
  • Damon and Jeremy. Touching in a twisted family issues kind of way.

The Bad

  • And why would Elena in a million years think that a carnival would distract Jeremy from his crap life? Does she think he's seven years old?
  • Picking up carnival workers, Bonnie? Does this guy want to get arrested for hitting on underage girls?
  • Do Caroline and Matt know about the vampires? Wouldn't he be suspicious of her sudden allergy to sunlight and the way she keeps sniffing his neck?

The Cliche

  • Don't attend school-sponsored events. And what is up with this massive carnival? How big is this school's booster club, anyways?
  • The Lockwood thing would be more interesting if I weren't quite so sure I was three steps ahead of all this.

Best Lines

Damon: "Aren't you worried that one day all the forest animals are going to band together? Cuz I'm sure they talk..."

What Did I Think?

This is only the third episode I have seen of this show and I can already tell that most of my compliments are going to sent at Damon, which is mildly disturbing as he is - technically - something of a psychopath. And no, "but he's a fun psychopath" is not a good excuse.
